Expectations.

My little cousin just messaged me for advice; advice on what subjects to pick for his GCSE’s. At that age, as we all were (or still are) - of course it’s natural to be a little lost and confused about the future, how the hell are you supposed to have it all figured out by the age of 15? I’m 20 and I still don’t have a clue. He’s at that stage, stressing over exams and not attaining ‘acceptable’ grades, thus bringing him down.

But as Paul Arden stated, “Your job at school is to accumulate and remember facts. The more you can remember, the better you do. Those who fail at school are not interested in facts; or maybe the facts are not put to them in a way they find interesting. It doesn’t mean they are stupid, it means that their imagination hasn’t been fired up by academic tuition.”

He mentioned his teacher said he should know what he wants to do with his future…and that’s what’s wrong with the system. Our entire educational life, we’re constantly told what to do, who we’re supposed to be, what we should and shouldn’t know…to hell with that. I told him to follow his heart and do what he enjoys doing and what makes him happy.

Fuck expectations and being who people want you to be.
